A gathering of students, friends and family renamed and dedicated the auditorium at the new Lockwood High School to “Q Staton Performing Arts Center” last Wednesday in memory of a most beloved teacher, Quentin David Staton, who died last August after a three-year battle with cancer. High School Principal Gwen Poole spoke to those who had gathered in the commons area to witness the unveiling of the large plaque that will henceforth designate the Q Staton Performing Arts Center, stating how fortunate Lockwood was to have had “Q” dedicate so much of his talent, his life’s work, and passion for students to the school.
His father, too, David Staton, spoke about his son, prior to the rest of Q’s family – mother (Gwen), his wife (Jocelin),children (Kayla, Skyy, and Jacksun) and grandchildren (Dakota and Calvin) — unveiling the engraved sign which dedicates the auditorium forever in his memory.
Q taught for 16 years at Lockwood. He had a natural gift for music, and sang “incessantly,” and he was extremely active in local and church choirs. His greatest gift to the community was in sharing his talent with Lockwood students, where “he was an integral part of the academic and personal growth of thousands of students. His classroom was a beacon of curiosity, and a safe haven of expression for all students.”
